Our learners use it too — often in ways that are very different from our own.

Here are five places to start.

1. Notice Your Habits Before You Try to Change Them

How often do you check your phone without really deciding to?

What makes you reach for it?

A notification? Boredom? A difficult task? A quiet moment?

Before changing a digital habit, it helps to understand what is actually happening.

Try observing your technology use for a day.

Not to judge it.

Simply notice.

When do you feel focused?

When do you become distracted?

Which digital activities help you — and which leave you feeling tired or overloaded?

Awareness gives us a starting point for change.

2. Decide When You Are Available

Digital communication has made it easy for teachers and learners to reach each other.

But easy access can quickly become constant access.

Think about the boundaries around your own communication.

Which channels do you use with learners?

When can they expect a reply?

Do you need to answer messages in the evening?

Are your boundaries clear to your learners — and to yourself?

Setting expectations does not make you less supportive.

It makes communication more predictable and sustainable.

3. Read Your Messages Through Your Learners’ Eyes

Digital communication removes many of the signals we normally use to understand each other.

There is no facial expression.

No tone of voice.

No immediate opportunity to clarify what someone meant.

A short message that feels perfectly normal to a teacher may feel very different to a learner.

Before sending an email or online message, pause for a moment.

Ask yourself:

How might this sound from the other side of the screen?

Is it clear?

Does the learner know what to do next?

Could the tone be misunderstood?

A few seconds of perspective-taking can make digital communication more human.

4. Create Offline Moments on Purpose

Putting a device away is easier when there is something meaningful to replace it.

A walk.

A conversation.

Cooking.

Reading.

Making something with your hands.

Spending time outside.

Instead of thinking only about reducing screen time, think about what you would like to create more space for.

This can work in learning environments too.

Not every activity needs a screen simply because technology is available.

Sometimes attention, conversation, movement or collaboration are exactly what the learning experience needs.

5. Understand Before You Judge

Young people are growing up in a digital culture that may look very different from the one their teachers experienced.

They have their own platforms, language, humour, habits and ways of communicating.

Some of these may seem strange.

Others may raise genuine concerns.

But understanding should come before judgement.

Ask learners about the digital spaces they use.

Listen to how they describe their experiences.

Explore what attracts them to certain platforms or types of content.

And learn about the pressures and risks they may encounter there.

We do not need to become teenagers again.

But if we want to guide young people in the digital world, it helps to understand the world they are navigating.

Healthy digital habits are not about creating a perfect relationship with technology.

There will still be busy days.

There will still be too many messages sometimes.

And there will probably always be moments when we realise we have been scrolling longer than we intended.

To notice.

They influence how we communicate, how present we are, what we model for learners and how confidently we can support them in their own digital lives.

When Does the Working Day Really End?

A message arrives in the evening.

You see it on your phone.

It will only take a minute to answer.

Then another notification appears.

Then an email.

And suddenly, work has quietly entered a part of the day that was supposed to belong to something else.

None of these moments seems particularly serious on its own.

But together, they can create an expectation of constant availability.

Digital communication has made the boundaries between work and private life much less visible.
